The stories were published once a month in issues from July 1891 through June 1892 in the newly appeared Strand Magazine.

All of the stories are narrated in the first person, with Dr. Watson as the narrator. In a number of the stories, criminals go unpunished for one reason or another, and there is also a recurring theme of exonerating the falsely accused.
In 1927 Conan Doyle named 12 of his best stories about Sherlock Holmes, among them there were several works from this collection, and the writer called the story «The Purple Ribbon» his favorite, and «The Union of Redheads» was in the second place.
